The quickest way to test a microphone online is a browser-based tool that shows a live volume meter as you speak -- no download, no account. ClearVoice’s mic test does this entirely inside your browser: your audio is analyzed locally and is never uploaded to any server.

Why test your mic before a call or recording

How to test your mic, step by step

  1. Open the mic test page.
  2. Click "Start mic test" and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  3. Speak normally and watch the bar -- it should move with your voice.
  4. Click "Record 3s & play it back" to hear exactly what your mic is capturing.

Frequently asked questions

Does any of my audio get uploaded or saved?

No. The live meter and the playback recording both run entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API -- nothing is sent to our server or anyone else's. Closing the tab clears everything.

The meter isn't moving -- what should I check?

First, check your operating system's microphone permissions (both for the browser itself, and for the specific site). Next, confirm the right input device is selected in your system's sound settings -- it's easy for a laptop to default back to its built-in mic after you unplug and replug a USB headset. Finally, check for a physical mute switch or button on the microphone or headset itself.

Does this work on mobile?

Generally yes -- modern mobile browsers (Chrome, Safari) support microphone access the same way desktop browsers do, though you'll need to grant the permission prompt the first time.

One more thing worth knowing: none of these tools remove background noise -- they just cut, convert, join or measure audio as-is. If your recording still has fan hum, room echo, traffic or a noisy AC unit under the voice, run it through ClearVoice’s AI noise removal afterward -- upload the file, and it comes back clean.
